Congratulations to Skipper Bob Karn for Earning the Silver Beaver Award! This is the highest recognition the Scout Council can award to a volunteer for service. Skipper nomination covered his 60+ years of scouting involvement and dedication to the Makai and Sea Scouting as a whole.

Congratulations to Bala Ramaswamy on earning the Sea Scout Leadership Award! The Sea Scout Leadership Award is presented to a volunteer who significantly contributes to the advancement of Sea Scouting. Bala is more than deserving of this award. He founded the Maritime Explorers Club which directly supports the Sea Scout Ship, due to his tireless efforts, the Makai has a full crew!

Congratulations to Commodore Steve Welch for earning the Silver Beaver Award! Steve serves as the Commodore for Golden Gate Area Council. His efforts directly support all Sea Scout units in the council enabling many successful programs today. His award like Skipper's spans a decades long dedication to Sea Scouting.

Welcome to the Sea Scout Ship Makai

Sea Scout Ship 700 (Makai) has been serving the youth of San Francisco Bay for over 65 years.

Sea Scouts is apart of the Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) program. Instead of hiking or camping, Sea Scouts go sailing and cursing. The Makai is a program for young men ages 14-21 who want to learn leadership, sailing, life skills, and how to have fun on the water.

We achieve our goal by operating two main boats.

The Makai

A 65 foot power boat, the Makai began its life as a US Navy Torpedo Retriever. She now serves as the Makai's main vessel. Powered by two Detroit Diesel 12V71 the Makai can make a top speed of 12 knots. The boat is operated by the Sea Scouts under the supervision of adult leadership.

The Sequoia

The Sequoia is a 45 foot Ketch Dufour. This beautiful sailing vessel serves as the Makai's primary sailing vessel. Onboard the Sequoia the scouts learn the traditional arts of the sailor being able to operate the boat in one of the worlds most premier sailing venues, San Francisco Bay.
